Description

After WWII, the Soviet Union did not only gain control over Eastern Germany, where the GDR was founded, but also over Bavaria. This lead to the foundation of the Bavarian Democratic People's Repbublic (dt.: Bayerische Demokratische Volksrepublik/BDVr). The BDVr was another socialist country part of the Warsaw Pact in central Europe. In order to erase Bavaria's nationalsocialistic heritage, many cities were renamed. Especially remarkable are the renamings of Nuremberg, which Hitler described as the 'most germanic city' in Germany, to 'Siegesstadt' (City of Victory) and Munich, the place where the NSDAP first got popular, to Kurt-Eisener-Stadt. Kurt Eisener was a famous local socialist, who proclaimed the Free State of Bavaria, which one might want to call the predecessor of the BDVr, in 1918 and later was assasinated.
The events of 1989/1990 didn't leave the BDVr uneffected. As its role-model, the Czech Republic, the BDVr switched to a democracy and to capitalism in 1992, from which on it was called Föderale Republik Bayern (Federal Republic of Bavaria).
Nowadays ther are calls that Bavaria should either join Austria or Federal Republic of Germany.
